Student Video: Name That Seed!
This fun and educational video demonstrates the many ways plants disperse their seeds. Some seeds have wings to soar through the air, while others roll into the ocean and float! The “Name that Seed” video, inspired by a poem by Heidi Bee Roemer, was created by Sierra Betsill, who earned an Honorable Mention in the 2025 STEAM Poetry Video Contest.

Seed Sorting Activity
Give students assorted seeds to observe, compare, and sort by appearance—examples rough/smooth, dark/light, or large/small. Create a class chart with headings such as size, shape, color, and texture. Sensory Bin Seed Exploration and Identification
Pour assorted vegetable seeds onto a cookie sheet and mix them with one cup of rice to create a sensory bin. Tape the empty seed packets on an ice cube tray to serve as labels. Collect Seeds on a Nature Walk
Give each child a small bag or basket. Encourage them to look for seeds growing or forming (as berries, nuts, or fruit), seeds scattered on the ground, or hidden inside dried flower heads. Seed Discovery Station
