Gears for Building Cooperation

Egg Beater Engineering
Let older students explore how an eggbeater’s gears turn handle motion into movement. Allow them to experiment with turning the handle in both directions. Discuss why different speeds are needed for different cooking tasks.
Clock Mechanism Study
Using mechanical alarm clocks or watches, students observe the gear trains that move the hour and minute hands. Have them sketch the gear system and discuss gear ratios— and why the hour hand moves more slowly than the minute hand.
LEGO Gear Challenge
