Grandma's Pink Lemonade
Making lemonade is a rewarding hands-on way to introduce students to liquid measurements. Take the math lesson one step further by doubling the recipe. Have students sell lemonade by the cup!
Ingredients:
- I cup cranberry juice
- 2 cups fresh-squeezed lemon juice
- 2 cups white sugar
- 9 cups water
Liquid Measurement Comparisons
First, show students that volume is all about the amount of liquid in a container, such as filling a measuring cup with water, while capacity is about how much a container can hold. Have kids compare a small glass to a big jug to see the difference in capacity.
Second, allow students to pour water from different containers into a graduated cylinder to see the volume of the container. They’ll not only know the difference in capacity but also measure the volume of liquid each holds. Water Drinking Relay Race
This activity can help improve students’ understanding of liquid measurements. Divide students into teams and set up stations. The objective is to be the first team to drink an entire liter or gallon of water with one sip using a straw. Modify the game by providing students with measuring cups. Have adults positioned and prepared to pour water into the cups.
