ACTIVITIES:

   Bring in the Butterflies!

A butterfly garden is an excellent long-term activity that will directly engage your little entomologists in the life cycle of the butterfly, and the role of the caterpillar in this biological process. Learn how to attract a variety of butterflies to your garden at http://bitly.ws/Gaos

   Caterpillar Cuties: Fingerprint Art

Your budding artists will enjoy creating caterpillars made from their own fingerprints! Cut out leaves from green construction paper.  Provide tempera paint and encourage children to dip their fingers in the paint and press them on the leaves to make a caterpillar. Add eyes and antennae with black markers. http://bitly.ws/GamI

 Count the Caterpillars!

Build your little biologists’ counting and social skills with this active group game! Cut a giant leaf from green poster board. Provide 10 caterpillar counters for each player.  Children roll a die and place the corresponding caterpillars on the board.  A bit of friendly competition can be had by declaring the first child to exhaust their caterpillar collection the winner. http://bitly.ws/GamI

   Caterpillar Match-Up Games

A great way to help your little scientists will learn about the wide variety of caterpillars! Obtain two sets of caterpillar picture cards from British Nature Education.  Show children two games: 1) encourage them to find matching cards and 2) reduce the collection for a memory game, cards placed face down, and have players take turns attempting to find matching cards. https://rb.gy/rp8t3

 Butterfly Life Cycle Sequence Cards

Enhance children’s math skills of order and sequencing with sets of butterfly life cycle sequence cards. Paste images onto colorful cardstock and laminate if possible. Encourage children to place cards in the correct order of the life cycle: egg to larva (caterpillar) to pupa to butterfly. http://bitly.ws/Gao7
